Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson Enter a Dangerous Game of Obsession in First Verity Trailer

Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller heads to the big screen with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading a twisted story where fiction, manipulation and desire become increasingly difficult to separate.

Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the trailer for Verity, offering the first look at the highly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller ahead of its October 2, 2026 theatrical release.

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity brings together Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett for a dark and seductive story built around secrets, obsession and the unsettling possibility that nothing is quite what it seems.

Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who receives an opportunity that could transform her career when she is brought to the remote home of renowned author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. Lowen has been hired to ghostwrite for Verity, but what begins as a professional assignment quickly becomes something considerably more dangerous.

While working at the Crawford estate, Lowen discovers what appears to be an unfinished autobiography containing disturbing revelations from Verity’s life. The writings expose a series of chilling confessions, forcing Lowen deeper into questions about the woman whose work she has been hired to complete and the family now surrounding her.

Complicating matters is Verity’s husband, Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett. As Lowen wrestles with what she has discovered, her relationship with Jeremy begins blurring another set of boundaries. Attraction becomes entangled with manipulation, opportunity gives way to obsession, and determining where the truth ends and fiction begins becomes increasingly difficult.

The newly released trailer leans directly into that uncertainty, setting the stage for a psychological thriller driven not simply by what its characters reveal, but by what they may be hiding. Hathaway’s Verity sits at the center of the mystery, while Johnson’s Lowen becomes the audience’s entry point into a world where every discovery raises another question.

The film also stars Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner.

Verity arrives on screen following the enormous popularity of Hoover’s novel, which became one of the author’s most talked-about works by departing from the romantic storytelling associated with much of her bibliography and embracing something considerably darker. Its combination of psychological suspense, sexuality and morally complicated characters helped turn the book into a publishing phenomenon and created plenty of anticipation around how its most provocative moments would translate to film.

The screenplay is written by Nick Antosca, with Hoover among the film’s producers alongside Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Michael Showalter, Jordana Mollick and Hathaway. Dakota Johnson also serves as an executive producer.

Rated R for sexual content, some nudity, language, violence and bloody images, the adaptation appears prepared to embrace the adult nature of its source material rather than soften the story for the screen.

With Hathaway, Johnson and Hartnett caught inside its increasingly dangerous triangle, Verity has all the ingredients for a fall thriller designed to keep audiences questioning what they have seen long after the final reveal.

Verity opens only in theaters October 2, 2026.
