Marvel’s New X-Men Assemble: D23 Reveals Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue and More as Major Roles Remain Open
Marvel Studios used D23 to officially introduce the first wave of mutants who will lead its new X-Men era, confirming Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd, Christopher Abbott and Adam Driver. But with Wolverine, Magneto, Beast, Mystique and several other iconic characters still unaccounted for, Marvel clearly has more surprises ahead.
After years of speculation about how Marvel Studios would reinvent the X-Men for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we finally have our first real look at the team.
Marvel unveiled a major portion of its new X-Men cast during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23, assembling a younger generation of mutants alongside some formidable established talent for the franchise’s long-awaited MCU debut.
Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, while Kit Connor takes on Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops. Maya Boyd has been cast as Ororo Munroe/Storm, Inde Navarrette will portray Rogue, and Samara Weaving steps into the role of the powerful and perpetually complicated Emma Frost.
Leading Xavier’s vision for mutantkind will be Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier.
Then there is one particularly intriguing addition on the other side of the equation: Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, giving Marvel’s new generation of mutants one of the X-Men universe’s most enduring and dangerous adversaries.
The cast appeared together at D23 as Marvel formally began pulling back the curtain on a movie audiences have been anticipating since Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox finally placed the X-Men under the same studio umbrella as the Avengers.
Jake Schreier, who previously directed Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, will direct the new film. The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters May 5, 2028.
The casting also offers some clues about Marvel’s approach. Sink and Connor place Jean and Scott at the center of a younger generation, while Abbott, Weaving and Driver bring more experienced dramatic weight around them. Including Mister Sinister this early is particularly interesting given his extensive comic-book history involving mutant genetics, experimentation and his longstanding obsession with the Summers and Grey bloodlines.
But perhaps just as fascinating as who Marvel announced is who it did not.
Several characters almost inseparable from the larger history of the X-Men remain without announced actors.
Most prominent is Wolverine. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine remains active within Marvel’s multiverse storytelling, but Marvel has not announced who, if anyone, will become the MCU’s long-term Logan for this new generation.
Magneto is another enormous unanswered question. The relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr has formed the philosophical backbone of countless X-Men stories, yet no new Magneto was included in this first casting reveal. Ian McKellen continues to represent the legacy version of the character within Marvel’s current multiverse era, leaving the identity of the MCU’s eventual Magneto wide open.
There is also no announced Beast, despite Hank McCoy being one of the foundational X-Men characters and already having a complicated presence within Marvel’s expanding multiverse.
Mystique remains another major vacancy. The shape-shifting mutant has played a central role across multiple generations of X-Men films, previously portrayed by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence, but Marvel has yet to reveal who might inherit the blue skin for its reboot.
And the list does not end there.
Marvel has yet to announce new versions of characters including Iceman, Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Gambit, Angel and several other mutants who could easily become major players as the franchise expands.
That distinction matters because Marvel did not present this D23 announcement as an exhaustive roll call of every mutant who will populate its new universe. What we have now is the foundation.
The presence of Rogue without a newly announced Gambit, Professor X without a new Magneto, and Cyclops and Jean Grey without Wolverine immediately leaves several of the franchise’s most famous relationships waiting in the wings. Meanwhile, choosing Mister Sinister as an early antagonist gives Marvel an opportunity to explore corners of X-Men mythology that previous theatrical franchises never fully developed.
There is also the lingering presence of the original cinematic X-Men universe. Marvel continues to use legacy performers, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn, within its larger multiverse story as the MCU moves through Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. That makes the eventual transition from those familiar interpretations to Marvel’s permanent new mutant generation even more intriguing.
For now, however, the new era has its first class.
Sadie Sink is Jean Grey. Kit Connor is Cyclops. Maya Boyd is Storm. Inde Navarrette is Rogue. Samara Weaving is Emma Frost. Christopher Abbott is Professor X. And Adam Driver is Mister Sinister.
Seven major pieces are officially on the board.
Now all eyes turn toward Marvel to reveal who comes next, because somewhere out there are a new Wolverine, Magneto, Beast and Mystique waiting to join them.
